I had a party on 6th Jan, partly to celebrate my 80th, but also the reopening of Micawber’s tavern In Pottergate. The new custodian and his team have transformed it in a few months from a dark and cheerless dive to a warm and friendly place with jolly food. I work from home and have friends in many different pockets of life who never get to meet each other. So it was wonderful to bring them together.

I had misgivings as always. Is it fair to be festive at such a critical time for the world and when illness and loss are par for the course for people in my age group, myself included. All the more reason to celebrate while we can, whatever it takes to keep our spirits up. It sure did that.

I don’t need to brag about it because one of the many thankyou letters I received says it all;’What a lovely gathering last Saturday It was a hoot, the pub was great, the food wonderful and the company second to none. The music was a joy too! We loved it .’

This is my thankyou to all those who came; to The Marisca Trio for their music, to to my daughter Polly for her beautiful invitation and a magnificent cake ; to Genadiy for his many photos & videos, ( not forgetting an apology to those not invited. Numbers were a consideration, but also a bug scrambled my invite list mid way.)

We can’t cure the follies of the world , but in making our interface with others the best that it can be, we make a difference.
